 An exciting opportunity for a Microfabrication Prototyping Core Manager has arisen in the Department of Bioengineering. The Microfabrication Prototyping Core is a new facility at Imperial College’s South Kensington Campus whose mission is to provide research groups across Imperial College with access to rapid prototyping capabilities for biomedical, life sciences, chemical and engineering applications.

The Core will be equipped for SU-8 photolithography, mask-free fabrication, soft lithography, 3D printing, laser cutting and next generation modalities. The Core is funded by a £13 million award from Cancer Research UK through the CRUK Convergent Science Centre, which aims to accelerate cancer research and management through the development of novel engineering and physical sciences technologies.

The Prototyping Core will operate in close coordination with the Bionanofabrication Suite, a new £2M cleanroom located in the Biomedical Engineering Research Hub of Imperial College’s new White City campus opening in 2020. The Bionanofabrication suite houses state of the art fabrication facilities capable of atomic layer etching & deposition in addition to patterning of biomolecules, metals and polymers. This world-class Bionanofabrication suite will provide unprecedented access to state-of-the-art tools for research, clinical and commercialisation activities for academia and industry.

The Microfabrication Prototyping Core Manager is a new role, whose duties in the Prototyping Core will include assisting the setup of the Core, developing microfabrication process workflows, leading the day-to-day technical operations of equipment, managing operation finances, installation of new equipment, training new users and ensuring equipment is maintained to the highest standards.

The post holder will report to the Prototyping Core Director & Technical Operations Manager, and will be primarily located in Imperial’s South Kensington Campus. The Manager will also support activities within in the Bionanofabrication suite cleanroom located in Imperial’s new Sir Michael Uren Hub White City Campus. To accomplish these goals, the successful candidate will work within a tight-knit team of technical operation staff in the Department of Bioengineering.

The successful candidate will have an Honours degree in engineering, materials, physics, chemistry or other suitable degree, or suitable relevant professional qualification or equivalent experience. We are looking for a skilled and highly organised individual who can work well as part of a team.

You will be working with a wide range of staff, students and visitors, excellent communication skills and management skills are essential. Cleanroom, photolithography and CAD experience is desired, but not essential since the post holder will be provided with all relevant training.

You will also have the opportunity to attend professional development workshops. Continuity of this post is subject to successful annual reviews of the CRUK Major Centre.

This position is full-time and fixed term for 3 years
